Lithomex
Lithomex has high vapour permeability, low modulus of elasticity, excellent bond characteristics and achieves early freeze thaw resistance. Lithomex develops early strength but not such that it becomes stronger than the background. Our stonemasons priority on each repair project is to make sure it is a near perfect match to the stone as we can, paying particular attention to its colour, tone, surface texture, tool markings, grain and weathering. We use traditional methods using lime-based mortars, which will allow the walls to breathe.

Edinburgh Stone Repairs & Masonry is based in Edinburgh. We are experienced builders. Our company specialises in building maintenance, construction, roof repairs, roofing, building renovation and repair. We provide all the trades and services required for homeowners, landlords and business clients.

Lime Pointing
Edinburgh Stone Repairs & Masonry specialise in the application of various types of lime plaster and lime mortar to historic, heritage and conservation buildings across Edinburgh and Central Scotland. The approach taken by us is both simple and effective. We use traditional methods combined with a knowledge of suitable modern materials. So whether that means matching the lime mortar of the building to replace it ‘like for like’ or ascertaining what the best eco materials available are that can do the building the justice it deserves.
Lime Wash & Lime Painting Services
Lime wash is pure slaked lime in water. It produces a unique surface glow due to the double refraction of calcite crystals. Limewash and whitewash both cure to become the same material.
When whitewash or limewash is initially applied, it has very low opacity, which can lead novices to overthicken the paint. Drying increases opacity and subsequent curing increases opacity even further.
Limewash relies on being drawn into a substrate unlike a modern paint that adheres to the surface. The process of being drawn in needs to be controlled by damping down. If a wall is not damped, it can leave the lime and pigments on the surface powdery; if the wall is saturated, then there is no surface tension and this can result in failure of the limewash. Damping down is not difficult but it does need to be considered before application of the limewash.
We Specialise In Stone Replacements
At Edinburgh Stone Repair we specialise in stone replacements, any stone that is structurally not safe must be cut out and replaced using same material and dressed to match original sandstone.
Openings In Traditional Masonry Buildings Has Never Been Surpassed
This method of fitting timber frames to openings in traditional masonry buildings has never been surpassed. The original mastic for junctions between masonry, render and wooden windows and doors, also used extensively for leaded or metal framed windows up and down the length and breadth of the United Kingdom and Ireland for at least 200 years, Burnt Sand Mastic fell out of favour because it required site mixing.

We replace unsafe masonry structures and dress sandstone to match the original sandstone curving and secured with 20mm stainless steel dowels and poxy glue then built with traditional lime mortar to preserve Edinburgh for many years to come.
