Angus Drystone

My dry stone journey began on the Mendip Hills in Somerset in 2008. I went on a DSWA weekend course after having visions of working with stone. Initially I did voluntary walling work to get my foot in the door.

I then worked with a mentor who helped me apply for a bursary from the Heritage Lottery Fund to support traditional building skills. As far as i'm aware it was the first bursary allocated for dry stone walling. It helped me get established over the course of a year.

Since those early days I've expanded my skill level working throughout the surrounding counties in the South West.  I've been fortunate to be part of a 6 person team to go to Italy, working on a project with other stoneworkers from Europe.
I've also had the privilege of working on several barrows with a team of stonemasons, recreating  Neolithic burial chambers in a contemporary style.
Other projects include restoring the dry stone walls at the top of Cheddar Gorge for the National Trust and the creation of an elaborate Celtic style firepit.
More recently my dry stone journey took us to Australia.

Now we have settled here in the historic county of Angus, Scotland in the land of the Picts.  My other passion is the study of prehistory and prehistoric art so I feel at home here in this ancient land of carved Pictish stones.

Testimonials

Neil replaced an eroding soil slope with a beautifully made wall incorporating flagstone steps.  Not a straightforward project but he went above and beyond.  Very conscientious, worked quietly and tidily, and understood completely what I wanted. A real craftsman and a pleasure to have around.

Neil has just completed an amazing project for us; he created a stunning red sandstone and oak slab seat in a south-facing bank. His workmanship was brilliant and the design was just what we wanted. Neil was a great person to deal with and it was enjoyable to discuss the project with him. Thank you again Neil.

Neil has just carried out an excellent job in my back garden. This was a 6mx1m drystone dyke, to convert previous rockery into a stepped down profile. He is a very conscientious worker and easy to discuss the work required. I highly recommend if you require such services.
